Thailand is a beautiful country worth visiting. It retains an ancient culture that is interesting and worth experiencing. In fact, exploring the culture of Thailand is in itself an attraction. However, before actually going to Thailand, you have to know some rules about the culture to avoid confusion and misunderstanding. Remember you are in a different country, and your cultural approach to certain situations and events may be vastly different from theirs.
First, you have to know that Thais respect the members of the royal family. Criticising royalty is not just frowned upon; the law forbids it. Show respect to them, and you should be okay. When entering a temple or place of worship, you need to dress appropriately. Shoes, a decent shirt, and pants are accepted. Note, however, that for some of the more conservative temples, casual attire is not even tolerated. Therefore, you have to wear something more encompassing such as a sarong or strips of cloth that traditional Thai wear.
On a related note, temples are considered to be extremely sacred grounds. When entering a temple, take your shoes off. You might want to wear lace-less shoes for convenience. Likewise, take off your shoes when entering someone's home. If you greet someone, do not shake their hands like what is universally done. Instead, greet them with a "wai." A wai is a traditional gesture that is made by placing your hands together in front of your face with palms touching each other with your fingers pointing upward, then making a small bow. Usually, Thai tradition calls that you should wai to an older person first. Lastly, Thais value the beauty of their country. Respect their country by throwing your litter in garbage cans, not just anywhere.
